The Blue Graces

The Blue Graces are one of the several orders of Graces who serve the Temple of the Graces in Meereen, a religious institution dedicated to the gods of Ghis. They are specifically identified as healers, responsible for tending to the sick and wounded. Their distinctive attire consists of blue robes and veils, which set them apart from the other orders, such as the White Graces (young noble girls), the Pink Graces, and the Green Grace, the high priestess.

Role and Duties

The primary function of the Blue Graces is to provide medical care. When a dying rider on a pale horse arrives at Meereen's gates, crying out that Astapor is burning, Grey Worm has the man brought to the Blue Graces for treatment. The Graces strip him, bathe him in cool water, and discover a mortified arrow wound in his thigh, along with evidence of the bloody flux in his soiled clothing. They report their findings to Daenerys Targaryen, explaining that the man died within the hour, still crying out that Astapor was burning. This demonstrates their role as both healers and diagnosticians, as they are the ones who identify the symptoms of the deadly disease.

Significance in the Narrative

The Blue Graces' role becomes increasingly critical as the pale mare spreads through Meereen and the Yunkish siege camps. Daenerys sends them to treat the Astapori refugees camped outside the city walls, but some of the Graces themselves fall sick, and their arts prove unable to slow the disease's progression. The queen's inability to fully protect her people is underscored by the failure of the Blue Graces' healing. Later, after the chaos in Daznak's Pit, Strong Belwas is taken to the temple and placed under the care of the Blue Graces, where he lingers near death. Their presence highlights the constant threat of disease and death that hangs over the city, even as political and military conflicts rage.
